New Age Music

new age music
For those that like the “music categories” would you like to see a “New Age Music” section?

There are a few categories for different sorts of music, I sure would love to see “New Age Music” be included too so I/we don’t have to post in “Other Music”.

Is it possible for that to be arranged?

I doubt there’s enough call for that particular genre. Are there categories for indie or alternative? I don’t believe there is. There are a number of well-known music categories not listed. If you want to suggest it, you could make that suggestion on the Yahoo! Answers Suggestion Board. If you click the “ABOUT” tab above, there is a link.

With a name like The Ultimate Most Relaxing New Age Music in the Universe, Kin Kou’s double-disc 24-track compilation of some of new age music’s most serene moments should come with a warning sticker that says “do not play while operating a vehicle.” While puffy-shirted legends like David Arkenstone, Kitaro, and Andreas Vollenweider lead the pack on this instrumental tour de force of non-power, it’s the subtle work of lesser-known artists of the genre — like Toshiyuki Watanabe, whose delicate “Falling Snow” is both sweet and sad — that gives this soundtrack to heavily sanitized waiting rooms everywhere the power of its conviction. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi

Brand New Age

Brand New Age

$15.56

For their second album, Brand New Age, the U.K. Subs built on the frenzied, melodic assault of their debut by developing their songwriting skills. Brand New Age contains tracks that are more ambitious than those on the debut, with more variety and lyrical depth. Rather than the amusing teen angst rants of the debut, this album shows the Subs embracing a more political point of view. “Warhead” is a seething diatribe on nuclear war, delivered with the venom and ferocity such a topic deserves. “Organised Crime” rants about government oppression, and “Brand New Age” delivers a less than optimistic slant on the forthcoming privacy intrusions of the 1980s. There’s no shortage of droll humor, though, with the hilarious “Teenage” and “Emotional Blackmail,” the closest the Subs have come to a song about relationships. Musically, the band have grown as well. “Warhead” has a more complex song structure than anything they did before, and “You Can’t Take It Anymore” proves the band doesn’t have to rely on simple velocity to get their point across. Far from falling prey to the sophomore slump, the U.K. Subs came of age on this album and proved they were one of the best, most promising acts of their era. ~ Victor W. Valdivia, Rovi Performers: Charlie Harper – Harmonica, Vocals; Nicky Garratt – Guitar; Paul Slack – Bass; Pete Davies – Drums; Steve Slack – Bass

The New Age Of Chaos

The New Age Of Chaos

$11.18

Although the terms death metal and black metal are often used interchangeably, the two are not identical any more than ska and reggae or merengue and bachata are identical. But it is certainly safe to say that death metal and black metal are very close allies and share a lot of common ground artistically. Death metal fans are often black metal fans, and it is not uncommon for a band to combine the two — which is exactly what happens on Vile’s third full-length album, The New Age of Chaos. This 2005 recording is death metal first and foremost; lead singer Juan Urteaga favors the type of deep, guttural, menacing growl that death metal is known for. But Vile does, at times, incorporate black metal elements, including blastbeats, ominous harmonies, and rasp vocals (which are used to complement Urteaga’s growling). Of course, Vile (an American band with a very Nordic-influenced approach) isn’t the only death metal unit to incorporate black metal — there are numerous Scandinavian bands doing this type of thing. But lyrically, The New Age of Chaos is more ambitious than the average death metal disc; this highly conceptual effort revolves around the theme of an all-out World War III with the West on one side and fundamentalist Islamic terrorists like al Qaeda on the other — and in a post-9/11 era, that scenario isn’t far-fetched. Urteaga, like a lot of death metal vocalists, makes the lyrics hard to decipher without the lyric sheet — which is regrettable because Vile’s lyrics are definitely above average by death metal/black metal standards. But all things considered, The New Age of Chaos is a decent, if imperfect, example of moshers adding some black metal ingredients to their skull-crushing death metal recipe. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi

The New Dark Age

The New Dark Age

$40.79

Taking their name from a stove employed to heat saunas (huh?), Finland’s Kiuas convey similar notions of perplexity with their third album, The New Dark Age, which despite its title’s implicit threat of hellfire and brimstone, stays well away from the more extreme strains of Scando-metal (black, death), and delves instead into an uncommonly experimental brand of power metal. What’s more, whereas most power metal bands seem content to rip off Iron Maiden at twice the normal speed (and with half of the creativity), Kiuas consistently challenge themselves and their listeners to shake things up — even while staying in touch with that genre’s more commercial sensitivities, via frequently conspicuous hooks, anthemic choruses, and ultra-flashy guitar and synthesizer solos. Most notably, Kiuas grooves like few of their countrymen can (or care to, at least), forging surprisingly syncopated riffs into strong fare like the title cut, “The Decaying Doctrine,” and “The Summoning,” and suggesting theirs is a far less insular outlook than much of their homegrown competition. More compelling evidence of this can be found in album standout “To Excel and Ascend,” which repeatedly shuffles its metallic foundation with acoustic guitars inspired by Indian ragas, while clashing waves of harsh growling against Ilja Jalkanen’s predominantly melodic vocalizing (gruff croaks are also used to good effect on the aptly named “Kiuas War Anthem” and the nod to Gothenburg death metal, “Of Sacrifice, Loss and Reward”). Closing epic “The Wanderer’s Lamentation” features a similarly impressive array of soft/hard sounds and moods, as well as discreet nods to Finland’s ever popular folk music; but these are then taken a little bit too far on the somewhat flat, all-acoustic “After the Storm,” featuring oddly nasal vocals. Also not quite up to snuff, the classic metal building blocks of “Conqueror” and “Black Rose Withered” are so devoid of surprises, they feel positively quaint compared to the above — although they may help to convert straightforward power metal fans to Kiuas’ idiosyncrasies. Needless to say, though, it’s the band’s far more prevalent compositional risk-taking that makes The New Dark Age a recommended entry point into Finnish heavy metal — somewhere between the extreme black and Viking metal marauders, and the power metal and AOR softies. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi Performers: Pasi Rantanen – Choir, Chorus; Pekka Heino – Choir, Chorus; Mikko Salovaara – Guitar

The New Age Steppers

The New Age Steppers

$15.27

The New Age Steppers were one of Adrian Sherwood’s first pet projects for On-U Sound, the label he started with then-wife Kishi Yamamoto, Creation Rebel’s Tony Phillips, Martin Harrison, Pete Holdsworth, and a gent named Lizard. The label’s first release was the New Age Steppers’ single for “Fade Away” (a brilliant, reverent remake of a Junior Byles song), which made a reappearance on the ad-hoc group’s self-titled debut LP. Released in early 1981, New Age Steppers features contributions from well over a dozen post-punk and reggae scenesters and, like the following Action Battlefield, the record epitomizes the spirit of the exciting late-’70s/early-’80s crossbreeding that took place between punk and reggae. Central to this record, Style Scott of the Roots Radics and George Oban of Aswad provide most of the rhythms, and the originals were penned predominantly by Sherwood and Scott, with the occasional outside contribution factoring into the whole. The Pop Group’s Mark Stewart pipes in with “Crazy Dreams and High Ideals,” a winding, warping dub composition filled with random surges of snare drums, searing, trebly effects, and crazy vocal tricks — Stewart seems to be yelping from the bottom of a well one moment, and then suddenly you’ll feel as if you need to wipe his spittle off your ear. Ari Up’s relaxed vocals highlight some of the album’s most song-based material; both “Love Forever” and the aforementioned “Fade Away” feature galloping pianos and thick, rhythmic bases that Up merely sails along with. The remainder of the record is comprised of instrumentals that throw all sorts of manipulations and funhouse oddities into the mix. The best of the bunch is a dub of Viv Goldman’s “Private Armies,” which treats a melodica (?) so heavily that it resembles a violin. Wild, unpredictable, and great. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi Performers: Ari – Vocals; Bruce Smith – Synthesizer, Drums; George Oban – Bass; John Waddington – Guitar; Steve Beresford – Bass, Piano; Vikki – Violin; Viv Albertine – Vocals, Guitar

The Golden Age of American Popular Music

The Golden Age of American Popular Music

$16.98

Though Ace’s Golden Age series of discs was initially devoted entirely to rock & roll, after numerous such volumes it branched out with thematic installments covering other forms of music that experienced success on the U.S. pop charts between the mid-’50s and mid-’60s. The Golden Age of Popular Music: The Folk Hits is another such imaginative anthology, compiling 28 folk singles that reached the Billboard charts during the era. There are, as you’d expect, some of the biggest such smashes, including the Kingston Trio’s “Tom Dooley,” the Rooftop Singers’ “Walk Right In,” Peter, Paul & Mary’s “If I Had a Hammer,” Gale Garnett’s “We’ll Sing in the Sunshine,” the Highwaymen’s “Michael,” the New Christy Minstrels’ “Green, Green,” the Springfields’ “Silver Threads and Golden Needles,” and the Brothers Four’s “Greenfields.” What makes this several cuts above the usual Time Life sort of collection of this material, however, is the inclusion of quite a few low-charting (or even barely charting) 45s that never get played on oldies radio, and give listeners a more rounded picture of the style than is commonly funneled through mainstream historical media. From well-known stars, for instance, there’s Johnny Cash’s cover of Bob Dylan’s “It Ain’t Me, Babe,” Joan Baez’s “We Shall Overcome,” Pete Seeger’s “Little Boxes” (his only chart single as a solo artist), and the Simon Sisters’ “Winkin’, Blinkin’ and Nod” (featuring a young Carly Simon). There are also oddball items from less celebrated figures, like Bud & Travis’ orchestrated, dramatic “Ballad of the Alamo”; Joe & Eddie’s ridiculously exuberant “There’s a Meetin’ Here Tonite”; the Greenwoods’ “Please Don’t Sell My Daddy No More Wine,” featuring C. Carson Parks, older brother of Van Dyke Parks; and the Shacklefords’ “A Stranger in Your Town,” co-written by group member Lee Hazlewood. If there are any grounds on which listeners might be mildly disappointed with this set, those would be that numerous major hits by the Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul & Mary are missing (though to be fair, each of those acts could easily fill an entire disc of hits on their own), and that there’s a dated, cutesy pop-folk feel to much of the material. You certainly don’t get earthy roots folk from the likes of Dave Van Ronk, Odetta, or a young Bob Dylan here, so it shouldn’t be taken as a representative overview of the folk revival as a whole. But as far as providing a thorough single-disc compilation of the folk revival at its most commercially successful, it would be hard to beat, especially considering it’s packaged with 32 pages of informative liner notes. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi

Bridge into the New Age

Bridge into the New Age

$15.18

There have been a number of compilations released in the latter years of the 21st century’s first decade that concern themselves with the spiritual jazz of the post-Coltrane years: The first really solid one was King Britt’s Cosmic Lounge: A Spiritual Quest for Higher Sound, released on Rapster; Nicola Conte’s Spiritual Swingers: Deep Afrocentric Modal Jazz from Universal Music Archives; Jazzman’s Spiritual Jazz: Esoteric, Modal & Deep Jazz from the Underground 1968 to 1977; Soul Brother’s African Spirits: A Spiritual Jazz Journey Looking Back to Africa; Universal Japan’s Jazz Supreme: Spiritual Love Is Everywhere, and the P-Vine offering Jazz Supreme: Spiritual Waltz-A-Nova. All of them are worthwhile, though there is some obvious overlap. That said, this set, Bridge into the New Age (named for a tune and album title by Azar Lawrence) on BGP is unique even among these offerings. For starters, all of the material comes from the Prestige vaults since all of these artists, including Lawrence, Gary Bartz, Joe Henderson, Bayete (Todd Cochrane), Idris Muhammad, McCoy Tyner, Norman Connors, and Jack DeJohnette all recorded for its affiliated labels at the time. The most unique aspect of this collection, however, is that this set of tunes showcases most effectively where the spirit of Coltrane’s investigations met the street that Miles Davis was most interested in addressing from the late ’60s on. All of these musicians were deeply influenced by both men, and most played with Miles — Tyner of course, and Alice Coltrane, who appears with Henderson on one tune reflects Coltrane’s influence. This is fusion music alright, but it is jazz fusion, where it met soul and funk yet remained firmly in the jazz camp while making use of other musics to further its margins; this was truly new jazz recorded between 1968 and 1974. Compiled, sequenced, and expertly annotated by Dean Rutland, virtually every track is a stone-killer and creates a gorgeous, thought-provoking, and groove-laden aural investigation of jazz during an oft-overlooked period when creativity and musicianship were not only blossoming, but engaging one another in a brave new way. Highly recommended. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Charlie Haden – Bas Dessus; Idris Muhammad – Cabassa, Cowbell, Gong, Horn, Drums; Larry Willis – Ring Modulator, Arp Echoplex, Piano (Electric); Alice Coltrane – Tamboura, Harmonium, Piano; Bobby Hutcherson – Vibraphone; Buddy Caldwell – Conga;

New Dark Age Parade

New Dark Age Parade

$13.58

Vancouver punk legends Subhumans resurfaced briefly in the mid-’90s to support their Pissed Off…with Good Reason! collection, but it wasn’t until 2006 that the politically charged group decided to write a sequel to its now classic 1981 debut. The newly re-formed quartet, which features new drummer Jon Card (SNFU/D.O.A.) alongside original members Mike Graham, Brian “Wimpy” Goble, and Gerry “Useless” Hannah, is still pissed off at the world on New Dark Age Parade. More overtly political than their previous release — bass player Hannah spent his post-band years underground, eventually getting himself convicted for bombing a weapons-system plant in Ontario as part of the Vancouver Five — NDAP is surprisingly visceral. Goble’s throaty rasp may echo Mescalaros-era Joe Strummer, but the band itself is firmly rooted in the late-’70s British punk sound that inspired it in the first place. Whether they’re attacking religious zealots (“I Got Religion”), the Iraq War (“Clash of the Intransigents”), or just having a good time (“Blood, Sweat and Beers”), these Subhumans aren’t just cashing in on faded glory, they’re writing a whole new chapter. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi Performers: Cayleigh Hanford – Vocals (Background); Dillon Berman Goble – Vocals (Background); Sarah Berman Goble – Vocals (Background); Brian Goble – Vocals; Gerry Hannah – Vocals (Background), Guitar, Guitar (Bass); Jon Card – Vocals (Background), Drums, Percussion; Mike Graham – Guitar

New Age of Earth

New Age of Earth

$12.79

The title was more prophetic than most — though Earth thankfully isn’t quite so bathetic as any number of releases on Windham Hill, by this point Gottsching was well into his electronic phase, the jam freakouts of the earliest albums replaced by a clean, crisp electronic bed. Unlike the rigorous pulse of fellow Krautrock pioneers Kraftwerk, though, Gottsching generally favored a more consciously playful and simply beautiful approach, aiming to create pleasant music to just enjoy and relax to. If not as serious and avant-garde as other artists, Gottsching was still coming up with the goods, so quite why his later albums have been generally ignored in comparison remains a mystery. Opening track “Sunrain” sounds like it could soundtrack a narrativeless documentary on just that, or at least some sequence of nature photography; bright and sparkling, the synths and drum machines blend together nicely. “Ocean of Tenderness” has a similar sense of film accompaniment, being a gentle, minimal flow of keyboard shading, electronic chirps deep in the mix, and a soft lead melody that carefully unwinds throughout the lengthy track, with a low-key bass pulse appearing a few minutes in as contrast. “Deep Distance” lives up to the title nicely, combining sweetly spaced-out drones with minimal percussion that sounds like raindrops as much as anything else as lead melodies slowly come to the fore. “Nightdust,” which takes up the original second side of the album, captures the original psych-jam feeling of Ash Ra Tempel more than anything else. A lengthy Gottsching guitar solo, heavily processed and extremely trebly, begins the piece over a series of soft synth shadings, leading to a marvelous composition with chilly, spectral keyboards and, later, deep electronic pulses and more straightforward guitar. It’s a spectacular performance, showing that even on his own Gottsching’s fire was still present, though aimed in other directions. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi Performers: Manuel Göttsching – Keyboards, Synthesizer, Guitar

 A Death in the Family

A Death in the Family

$15

Forty years after its original publication, James Agee’s last novel seems, more than ever, an American classic. For in his lyrical, sorrowful account of a man’s death and its impact on his family, Agee painstakingly created a small world of domestic happiness and then showed how quickly and casually it could be destroyed. On a sultry summer night in 1915, Jay Follet leaves his house in Knoxville, Tennessee, to tend to his father, whom he believes is dying. The summons turns out to be a false alarm, but on his way back to his family, Jay has a car accident and is killed instantly. Dancing back and forth in time and braiding the viewpoints of Jay’s wife, brother, and young son, Rufus, Agee creates an overwhelmingly powerful novel of innocence, tenderness, and loss that should be read aloud for the sheer music of its prose. An utterly individual and original book…one of the most deeply worked out expressions of human feeling that I have ever read. The slow, driving chorus on songs like Ocean, and A Different Kind of Pain belies the strife within the lyrics; and Baskette has handled it deftly.

$10.16

IN THIS UNIQUE AUTOBIOGRAPHY, John Dunne meditates on what it is to love God with all one’s mind, might, heart, and soul. Dunne’s captivating prose connects contemporary theology with the very real life experiences of finding, losing, and living love. Centered around pivotal moments at various stages in his life, A Journey with God in Time uses the grist of Dunne’s experiences to plumb new theological and spiritual depths. A series of dramatic Thomas Cole paintings reflects the time periods–childhood, youth, adulthood, and old age — that form the organizational backbone of this work. Among the life experiences Dunne discusses are his relationship with his grandfather, his love of music, and his thoughts on death. In prose and song cycles Dunne takes readers on a spiritual journey through his extraordinary, and sometimes ordinary, life. Readers will find rich nourishment for mind and soul in this compelling new book.

 A Yes-Or-No Answer: Poems

A Yes-Or-No Answer: Poems

$22

In her acclaimed collections Happy Family and Music Minus One, Jane Shore traced her life from childhood to coming of age to parenthood. Now, in A Yes-or-No Answer, Shore etches the persistence of the past in a life that has moved into a mature new phase as a member of the baby boom generation. Recalling her Jewish childhood in New Jersey, living in the apartment above the family’’s clothing store, Shore lovingly imagines her parents, now gone, reunited with relatives over a Scrabble board in the afterlife. The poet’’s teenage daughter sorts through the vintage clothes of her mother’’s own hippie days. Cherished items left behind — an address book, a piano, an easy chair, a favorite doll — continue to haunt the living. The poems in A Yes-or-No Answer dignify memory through precise detail, with a voice that will resonate for a generation at a crossroads.

B2K garnered mainstream recognition long before the release of their self-titled debut CD. J-Boog, Lil’Fizz, Omarion and Raz-B spent two and a half months in the summer of 2001 opening for Lil’ Bow Wow and later appeared in the video for his recent hit Ghetto Girls. Critics and fans alike agree–B2K had young concert fans going wild, but their energetic stage presence also brought back some great memories to older audiences, evoking the spirit of the Jackson 5 and New Edition. The smooth and seductive debut single Uh Huh, produced by C. Tricky Stewart (Blu Cantrell, Usher), introduces the CD and showcases spicy boy meets girl verses from each B2K member. The accompanying music video for Uh Huh, produced by Hype Williams, offers the perfect visual compliment to the song’s flashy production, and gives B2K a chance to perform some of their most exuberant dance moves. Last Boyfriend features a lovelorn Omarion’s terse vocals about a girl who seems to afraid to get involved too deeply because of sour feelings from her last relationship. Produced by perennial hit-maker Jermaine Dupri, it’s got the Atlanta modern hip-hop soul flavor. Sure to be a single contender, B2K Is Hot proclaims that the boys are on the scene and here to inspire youngsters into a party spirit. Hey Little Lady, a production from Platinum Status features heavenly multi-layered harmonies, but this time, the boys talk about meeting and impressing an around-the-way girl. Yes, B2K puts their hearts on the line with their music…and makes the ladies sigh. But most importantly, B2K crosses all color, age and musical barriers–indeed, these boys are determined to win over fans of all kinds. They do their thing with flair, style and a genuine love for both their fans and their music.

Bach and the Patterns of Invention

$195.93

In this major new interpretation of the music of J. S. Bach, we gain a striking picture of the composer as a unique critic of his age. By reading Bach’s music against the grain of contemporaries such as Vivaldi and Telemann, Laurence Dreyfus explains how Bach’s approach to musical invention in a variety of genres posed a fundamental challenge to Baroque aesthetics. Invention – the word Bach and his contemporaries used for the musical idea that is behind or that generates a composition – emerges as an invaluable key in Dreyfus’s analysis. Looking at important pieces in a range of genres, including concertos, sonatas, fugues, and vocal works, he focuses on the fascinating construction of the invention, the core musical subject, and then shows how Bach disposes, elaborates, and decorates it in structuring his composition. Bach and the Patterns of Invention brings us fresh understanding of Bach’s working methods, and how they differed from those of the other leading composers of his day. We also learn here about Bach’s unusual appropriations of French and Italian styles – and about the elevation of various genres far above their conventional status.

Ballad of the Broken Seas, the collaborative album recorded with former Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age singer, Mark Lanegan. Isobel initially met Mark Lanegan in Glasgow while he was on tour with Queens of the Stone Age. Professing to be a big fan of her music, Lanegan made an offhand comment about how he would love for them to make a record together. Isobel took the idea and ran with it, writing a number of songs with Lanegan in mind, communicating with him via the internet, and posting over tracks for him to add his vocals to.

Music students study technology and technology has enabled more amateur musicians than ever before to create their own recordings. Written in the simplest language, he makes the subject easy for all to understand, whatever their age or background. This book looks at the techniques used in mixing and mastering music so that when it is finally released on CD, it sounds as good as it possibly can.
