Intimate Relationship With Christ – The Dearest Thing on the Planet by Joyce Meyer
Howard: I think more than anything the Lord wants to develop our character, that it would conform to the person of Christ and that when we have the wrong attitude, I do think that often he will withhold things from us because he’s mostly intent on developing our character and it may be discipline that he’s inflicting on us at the moment ultimately to develop that godly character.
Joyce: Just like you wouldn’t give a car to a teenager that had already shown you that you couldn’t trust them in other areas. You might want to and you’ll save it for them, you’ll keep it for them but you’re gonna teach them some things first. So you’re right, God does have to teach us sometimes how to handle things properly and he really doesn’t want us to be jealous and envious because the bible tells us that we’re not to covet what other people have. It’s actually one of the “big ten.” We need to realize God has a plan for us and just try to develop the habit of being happy for other people and then just saying “God, I know you have a plan for me.” We have about thirty seconds left here, Howard, before I have to close, so what would be the last closing comments that you’d like to make?
Howard Dayton: Well, Joyce, I would just encourage people to learn what God says about handling money and that how you handle money has a huge impact on your intimacy and your relationship with Christ. Luke 16:11 tells us if we’re not faithful in the use of worldly wealth, who will trust us with the true riches? The true riches in life is that intimate relationship with Christ and there are plenty of practical things you can do to get your finances in order based on the word of God but it’s that intimate relationship with Christ that’s the dearest thing on the planet.
Joyce Meyer: That’s exactly right. Howard, thank you so much for being with us today. We appreciate it. We’re offering some resources as always. We always do this. Often dismissed as paranoid and irrational, Stalin’s behavior followed a clear political logic, contend Yoram Gorlizki and Oleg Khlevniuk. Stalin’s consistent and overriding goal after the war was to consolidate the Soviet Union’s status as a superpower and, in the face of growing decrepitude, to maintain his own hold as leader of that power. To that end, he fashioned a system of leadership that was at once patrimonial-repressive and quite modern. While maintaining informal relations based on personal loyalty at the apex of the system, in the postwar period Stalin also vested authority in committees, elevated younger specialists, and initiated key institutional innovations with lasting consequences. Compelled to Crime $46.95 Compelled to Crime documents the lives of battered, African American women incarcerated in a New York City correctional facility. Chronicling the lives of women from low-income communities who have been physically battered, sexually assaulted, emotionally abused, and involved in illegal activity, the book illustrates the degree to which these women’s devastated and deteriorating circumstances represents a socially constructed position–but one from which there is little escape. Borrowing the phrase gender entrapment from the legal notion of the term–which implies a circumstance whereby an individual is lured into a compromising act–author Beth Richie uses gender entrapment to describe the process whereby African American women who are vulnerable to men’s violence in their intimate relationships are penalized for criminal behaviors they engage in when these behaviors are logical extensions of their racialized gender identities, their culturally mediated gender roles, and the violence in their private lives. The book documents in graphic detail the lives of these women–often marred by drug use, prostitution, and violence culminating in illegal activity. Richie charts the women’s gender entrapment by considering a number of factors in their early lives–whether the women were privileged in their homes as girls and how such benefits actually might have handicapped them; their relationships with males; the presence or absence of childhood abuse–and how these factors contributed to their sense of vulnerability and fear of success later in life. Richie then analyzes how the women’s circumstantial and emotional vulnerability in the early years sets the stage for the violencein their intimate relationships with men as adults, and how the women’s feelings of self-blame, emotional trauma, and desperation lead them–perhaps inexorably–into illegal, often violent activity.
